Picking up right where Star Wars, the Force Awakens' story left off, The Last Jedi continues the adventures of Rey, Finn, and Poe following their triumph over the First Order forces on Starkiller Base. Though the Resistance scored a huge victory, we are still faced with many questions: How can the Resistance possibly hope to stand against such an obviously superior foe? Will the now-located Luke Skywalker come out of hiding to save the galaxy?

Oh, and just who is this last Jedi, anyway?

Spoilers ahead!

Although audiences are understandably split in their reaction to The Last Jedi as a film, I believe Jason Fry's novelization of Rian Johnson's tale works as a far more effective vehicle for his story. From Luke's intriguing prologue (not featured in the film), to the characters' inner monologues, all these additions serve to explain and better inform many of the films more . . . shall we say, "head-scratch"-inspiring moments. Also, Thompson's narrative work--which I usually find a little too dramatic--is absolutely spot-on throughout the audio adaptation.

Anyway, here's the bottom line: If you thought the movie was great, you'll no doubt enjoy the added exposition and insight into the characters. Those who disliked the film and story entirely? Well, you should probably save yourself the time. However, if you're like me and somewhat enjoyed the movie, yet thought it fell short in explaining character actions, motivations (or *cough* abilities), then I'd suggest you give the novelization a try.
