Sleepwalk with Me- And Other Painfully True Stories by Mike Birbiglia

Feb 3, 2011

I have always really enjoyed Mike Birbiglia's humor. He has this ability to make situations (that have happened to most people) and make them his own- making the reader/listener feel bad for him. While I was reading this book, I could hear Mike's voice in my ear. This absolutely added to the books humor factor.

I first heard Mike on Bob and Tom during my morning commute. His Secret Public Journal had me laughing outloud. He has since become a regular on This American Life and The Moth.

This book held my interest- it had quite a few laughs. My favorite chapter was the one on Mitch Hedberg. Mike's take on his encounters with him were so clear that I could imagine I was there. Which is rare for a comedian who trys to write.

Another interesting side note, Mike has a major sleep disorder- insomnia that leads to sleepwalking. Makes for some funny stories, since it was happening to someone else and not me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book- it was exactly how I expected it to be.  Mike definitely plays the dumb guy, even though you can tell by his humor and story telling abilities he is quite the opposite, but every comedian has got to have their Shtick!

I would highly suggest if you have never heard Mike's voice, you do so before you read this book. It is a big plus to hear his voice delivering the words to you while you read.
