Alice Hayward was strangled by her husband on the evening following her baptism. Her husband’s dead body is found in the same room and it is assumed that he shot himself. However, complications are discovered in the form of Alice’s diary. This novel of sadness and tragedy is told in the voices of four of its characters: Alice’s pastor and former lover, the Assistant D.A. investigating the case, Heather Laurent who is the child of parents who died by murder and suicide, and Katie Hayward – Alice’s teenage daughter, left alone by the tragedy. Although readable, the complications and ending of this tale make it somewhat unsatisfying.
