Jazz can be clean,
be made like yachts
and granite countertops
in blinding white kitchens,

but the best jazz
is dirty like pickup

baseball in the park
just after rain, like barbeque

from the joint
down the street that your grandmother

would never set foot in,
like the studio apartment

where the writer scatters
ink like blood and sheds

paper like skin, more
shapeshifter than snake.
