Moon

This 2009 film may remind you of "2001: A Space Odyssey". Sam Bell (played by Sam Rockwell) is stuck on the dark side of the moon with only Gerty the robot for company. He gets occasional pre-taped video messages from his wife, but otherwise his three-year stint working for Lunar Industries mining fuel from lunar soil is devoid of human contact. With only two weeks left before his much-anticipated return to earth, things start getting weird. To say much more about the plot would ruin the film. I was amazed that I hadn't even heard of this movie. Rockwell's performance is excellent. An everyman for the 21st (?) century. This is a thoughtful, haunting portrayal of one person's struggle to retain his humanity without the aid of other humans. Special mention goes to Kevin Spacey who provides the voice of the robot. Perfectly.
