A Duty to the Dead by Charles Todd

Jan 18, 2011

This mother and son writing team may be from the U.S. but they write very convincingly of World War I era England.  Their books are atmospheric to the point of making the reader check for fog.  This is the first of the Bess Crawford mystery series.  Bess, raised in India by a military family, follows in her father’s footsteps and volunteers as a nurse in France and on a hospital ship. She becomes close to a dying soldier who made her promise to deliver a cryptic message to his brother at home.  While recuperating at with her family after an injury of her own Bess cannot avoid the opportunity to fulfill her promise.  The journey becomes much more complicated than she could imagine when Bess finds inconsistencies that seem to be tied to the dead soldier and his mysterious family.  She must pursue all avenues to see that she carries out her duty to the dead.
