cold-kiss-by-rector.jpgThis is another first book by a new author. And it is a good one. Cold Kiss by John Rector begins with a young couple, Nate and his pregnant girlfriend, Sara, heading from Minnesota to Reno to get married. They stop at a roadside diner in Nebraska just as a snowstorm begins. They are low on cash so when Syl White, a fellow traveler whose car has broken down, offers them $500 to take him to Omaha, they accept. Nate and Sara soon realize that Syl is not in very good health. He is coughing up blood and seems to be barely breathing. Meanwhile the snowstorm has turned into a blizzard and there are no towns within miles. The trio happen upon a small motel in the middle of nowhere and Nate checks into a room. Night is falling and so is the snow….harder than ever. When they try to rouse Syl they can’t….he doesn’t seem to be breathing and he has no pulse. Alas, Syl is dead! Now what are they going to do? Under the cloak of darkness Nate carries Syl to a copse of trees and leaves him there for the snow to cover. Nate returns from his burial mission and carries all of the bags into the motel room. One of them is not theirs. It belongs to Syl and contains nearly $2 million in cash. Now enter Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling and the story gets more and more bizarre. Where did all of this money come from? Who was Syl running from? Cold Kiss is a short, fast read and worth your time. John Rector is off to a good start. Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
