It’s no secret that pirates are good-for-nothing swindlers, assassins, and thieves — and Alosa may be the worst of them all. Trained personally by her father, the pirate king, she has learned to be cutthroat and ruthless, and will do nearly anything to get what she wants. When Alosa is tasked with retrieving a part of a legendary treasure map that happens to be on the ship of a rival crew, she facilitates her own capture to access the map. However, she’ll have to best the unexpectedly clever and wily first mate, Riden, before she can complete her mission.

They never anticipate meeting Molly, a young Starcatcher, or battling pirates in an effort to protect the magical "starstuff" from the wrong people. A vicious, foul-smelling pirate called Black Stache, his crew of savages and a greedy ship's captain all vie for a trunk filled with the powerful starstuff.

The Hariri are so angered, they send a magic-using assassin after her. But when the assassin, Naji, confronts Ananna and she accidentally saves his life, he becomes bound to her through a powerful, magical curse. They set out on a quest to break this "impossible curse," all the while fleeing the angry Hariri clan and strange, otherwordly beings with a mysterious agenda.
