closeness through a traumatic experience. Roo, the older sister, crashes her car and gets
“locked-in syndrome” where she can see and hear everything but cannot respond verbally or
physically. She and her younger sister, Tilly, have to figure out how to communicate with each
other again. The book talks about dealing with guilt and how traumatic events can make
relationships between people even more complex. It depicts a lot of real emotions: anger,

Vanishing Girls, by Lauren Oliver, is about 2 sisters finding their ways into the world. Nic and Dara weren’t the closest of sisters but they looked out for each other. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a novel about a 14-year-old girl named Lily, desperate to escape her abusive father and find out about her mother’s long-lost secrets after her death many years ago. It is a compelling love story between women, as it greatly displays divine feminine power. I recommend this book to anybody who truly wants to be inspired by sisterly love and the power of sisterhood.

The Vanishing Half is set in the 20th century and follows the lives of twins--Desiree and Stella--born into a colorist town named Mallard. As the twins split ways, each to her own adventures, they both share their own unique stories and reveal the trauma involved with their youth. However, despite their differences and their split, they always manage to find each other. This book does a great job of showing aspects of internal discrimination within a community, whether it be race or gender.

The novel Homegoing, is an eye-opening story that depicts an unflinching portrayal of the slave trade exports in the 18th century and its contrasting impacts down the generations. Gyasi conveys these struggles by sharing the stories of two half-sisters (and their descendants), Effia and Esi, one who married a wealthy English man and the other who was sold into slavery, representing how slavery destroyed one line of the family while it cursed the other.
