“She's the most important person in the world [but] her family [lives] in poverty.” This is the truth engraved in every page of the book. In a society full of racial inequality, those of darker skin are secretly used as test subjects in the medical world. They are lured into hospitals, claiming to offer “free” treatment. But the actual price they pay at the end of the day is beyond monetary value. One such victim was a Black mother, Henrietta Lacks.

Montgomery introduces several new important characters – the hilarious Mr. Harrison, twins Dora and her bad-boy brother Davy and younger Avonleans of all kinds.

Sixth grader Nate Wright needs a new skateboard…but more than that he needs to beat perfect Artur at SOMETHING. Artur has Jenny, the girl Nate likes. Artur charms adults and kids alike, and Nate can’t stand it. What makes it double awful is that Artur is such a nice guy. Infuriating. But Artur is to blame for Nate’s losing his skateboard…indirectly. Artur dripped paint in Nate’s eye, causing Nate to knock over the ladder Artur was on. Nate got detention (Artur didn’t), and Nate had to hurry on his skateboard to get to Timber Scouts.

Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys that get stuck on an island. They try to make rules and pick leaders, but they can't seem to maintain that structure. They start turning on each other and turning into savages. It shows how kids act when there's no grown-ups around and how people change when they are away from civilization.
