“Do not be ridiculous, boy. You cannot kill what is already dead.”
“I suppose it does not feel the same without her . . . Some people leave too much space behind when they are gone.”
The wait is over, and Katharine wears the crown. But does she really? More queens seem to be popping out of the woodworks, and she has the sneaking suspicion that her other two sisters continue living, and that they will return to take the throne.
“Three dark queens
Are born in a glen,
Sweet little triplets
Will never be friends
Three dark sisters
All fair to be seen,
Two to devour
And one to be Queen”
Once a generation, triplet girls are born to the queen. Separated from birth and taught the unique type of magic they each possess, they will meet again on their 16th birthday, when they fight to the death for the right to their throne.
“It is not lives we regret not living that are the real problem. It is the regret itself. It's the regret that makes us shrivel and wither and feel like our own and other people's worst enemy. We can't tell if any of those other versions would of been better or worse. Those lives are happening, it is true, but you are happening as well, and that is the happening we have to focus on.”
