Soul Lanterns by Shaw Kuzki is about a twelve-year-old girl named Nozomi. She lives in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The city she lives in was bombed 25 years ago and caused many deaths of innocent people. During a certain time of the year, people from Hiroshima put lanterns in water and let them float as a memorial for the loved ones they lost during the devastating bombing that took place 25 years ago. As usual, during the holiday Nozomi's mom was placing two lanterns in water, a colored one and a white one. On this day Nozomi realizes that only the colored lantern was for someone that she knew, her dad. The other lantern didn't have a name and Nozomi did not know who it was for. This sparked Nozomi’s curiosity. Nozomi gets curious and starts learning more about the bombing and the mystery of the lantern without the name. This book is very interesting if you understand the meaning behind it. It has a lot of bittersweet and sad chapters but also has some funny ones. This book is also a pretty short read and I liked how the authors explain in depth what the attacks on Hiroshima were like. This book is good for people in the 10-15 age range and is an overall good read.
