Everything We Never Said is a realistic fiction young adult novel that follows Ella and Sawyer through the grief of losing Hayley, Ella’s best friend and Sawyer’s girlfriend. Ella blames herself for what happened on that tragic night, and she feels like a shell of who she used to be. Meanwhile, Sawyer knows something Ella doesn’t, but he can't tell her, it would ruin everything. As the two of them attend therapy sessions together and cry in each other's arms, things shift and suddenly the two of them are madly in love. While they date in secrecy, Ella starts reading Hayley’s diary, learning so many things she wishes she could unread. Towards the end of the book, Ella is kidnapped by Hayley’s abuser and is saved by the person you are least expecting. My favorite part of the book is the character development of Seema, Ella’s old friend who becomes Ella’s support system through the ups and downs of the plot. I gave this book a five because the plot twists are insane and I did not see them coming at all. I would recommend this book to 8th/9th graders.
