Blue de la Cour is a talented alchemist with a dangerous secret: she is a witch. In Balavata, magic is both feared and hated, so the magic in Blue’s blood could very well lead to her death. After her father’s sudden death, she is thrown into turmoil, finding herself the ward of Lady Chauveau, a powerful councilwoman. What’s more, strange things are happening in the kingdom — orphans are being kidnapped, daughters of influential families are being murdered, and screams of monsters echo through the streets. As attacks on the street become more frequent, Blue is forced to work with her childhood enemy, Prince Kellan, in order to save the kingdom.

I thought this was a great book! Even though I really don’t like the tale of Cinderella, I enjoyed The Blood Spell a lot. The characters were so diverse, which made their interactions really fun to watch. I also loved how the romance was written — the character dynamic between Blue and Kellan was so well written, and the banter completely exceeded my expectations in both its wittiness and its originality. I did find the plot to be a bit predictable, though that might be attributed to the fact that it is derived from a well-known fairytale. I would have also liked more dialogue, since what I did see was so great. Overall, though, I really liked this book and I would definitely recommend it!
