The Aquanaut by Dan Santat was a moving, fun graphic novel about marine life and the meaning of family. You meet Sophia, the daughter of Michel who dies in the sinking of vessel that he and his brother were using to research the sea. During this sinking, Paul ends ups surviving and is left to take care of Sophia. Paul is quite busy with his work, leaving Sophia alone a lot. One day an old diving suit appears out of the water. What the people don’t know is that it’s operated by marine animals. Sophia bumps into the suit while its on its way to Aqualand, the marine reserve her father and Paul made together. Together Sophia and the marine animals learn about family values, about how animals feel, and together they further explore Aqualand. I thought it was a nice, fun quick read and I thought that the idea was quite interesting. I loved how they mixed in some facts about the animals throughout the book. I would recommend this book especially to middle schoolers or younger kids. The pictures really depict the characters well, which is something I really liked about this book. Overall, the Aquanaut was a great read.
