The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is a book about two children named Ada and Jamie. Ada is a 10-year-old girl who is living in terrible conditions. They usually didn’t have food or water to drink or any to bathe with. Ada also had clubfoot and her terrible mother hated her because of it. She forced her to stay in one room and go to the restroom in a bucket. Whenever Ada was “bad” she made her climb into and old dirty cabinet. She was abusive to Ada and Jamie. Then one day Ada and Jamie snuck onto a train and away from London as evacuees. They met a lady named Susan Smith. Then they got closer to Susan and started to live happily.  Ada starts to learn how to ride Butter, the pony that Susan owned. One day they get separated from Susan by Ada’s Mam.

I really loved this book because I like how it was written in an older style and I liked how Bradley described the condition of old England. I recommend this book to people who are ages 9-14 years old. This book is incredibly descriptive and might not be the best fit for people who have weaker stomachs. I definitely recommend this book because it is amazing! This book has a sequel, The War I Finally Won.  Make sure you read this too!
