The Wall is one of the most important and impressive concept albums of all time, and marks the greatest height of Pink Floyd’s creativity. The album tells the story of Pink, a rock star who constructs a wall around himself as the result of his many struggles. It fuses elements of progressive rock, opera, and social commentary to create a uniquely rich and impactful story, as well as plenty of enjoyable songs. To perhaps a greater extent than any other album of similar fame, The Wall immerses listeners in one long narrative experience that lasts from Pink’s birth to the very end of his breakdown. As some point out, the album loops, implying an even more enduring struggle than the one depicted, or perhaps repeated cycles of the same issues. Interestingly, this album is based on the real life struggles of Roger Waters’ own life, which adds an extra dimension to the album that makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to. To some, the album may seem too bleak and intense for casual listening. Some also argue that it takes itself more seriously than other Pink Floyd albums, or that Waters takes too many creative liberties. It is most definitely a step in a different direction from the rest of the band’s catalogue, but not necessarily to its detriment. This album is best for fans of the band’s other work and newcomers alike, as long as they don’t demand anything in particular from the performance and instead take it for what it is. Listeners - even those who know other Floyd albums - should expect an entirely different set of sounds than they’ve heard, so those looking for this experience should enjoy taking a listen. The album is best experienced all the way through, though individual songs can pack quite a punch as well.
