Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen is a compelling coming-of-age novel that follows the journey of Cole Matthews, a troubled and defiant teenager with a history of violence. After a brutal attack on a classmate, Cole is given the choice between juvenile detention and Circle Justice, a Native American alternative that focuses on healing and rehabilitation. As part of his sentence, Cole is sent to a remote Alaskan island where he must confront his inner demons and the harsh realities of the wilderness. Through encounters with a mysterious white bear and a Tlingit Indian named Garvey, Cole undergoes a transformative process of self-discovery, redemption, and healing, ultimately learning important lessons about accountability, empathy, and the interconnectedness of all living things.

The most compelling aspect for me was the powerful journey of self-discovery and redemption that the protagonist, Cole Matthews, undergoes. The novel skillfully weaves together themes of accountability, healing, and the profound impact of nature on personal transformation. I found the vivid descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness and the interactions with the spirit bear to be particularly evocative, creating a captivating backdrop for Cole's emotional and physical journey. The book didn't disappoint me at any point. It had a lot of action and just the right amount of character development. I would recommend Touching Spirit Bear to friends who appreciate stories of personal growth, redemption, and the profound connection between individuals and the natural world. The book's universal themes make it relevant and impactful for a wide audience, and its powerful messages lingered with me long after I finished reading. It's a compelling and emotionally resonant tale that sparks ideas of resilience, forgiveness, and the potential for positive change. I give this book a five out of five stars.
