I recently watched The Sound of Music for the very first time, and I wish I would have watched it sooner. The musical is set in Austria during World War 2, during the period when Austria was being annexed by Nazi Germany. It follows a young nun, Maria, who has just left the convent because of her wild whimsical behavior. Maria is sent to become the governess of the Von Trapp household where she meets widow Captain Georg von Trapp and his seven children. The Sound of Music is a wonderful, cheerful film set in a dreadful setting, showing the power of joy and art in the darkest times and the necessity of resistance. The Sound of Music would be nothing without its classic and world renown soundtrack; “Edelweiss” and its reprise are my personal favorite. There is something charming and sweetly nostalgic about Julie Andrews' voice over the orchestra. Her voice immediately calms the soul crescendoing through the melodies. The predominant theme in The Sound of Music is the joy in music. When Maria first arrives at the Von Trapp house the children are quite mischievous, ready to send her packing and rebelling against any authoring, desperate for the attention of their father after the death of her mother. Maria's optimistic and kind attitude softens the children's hearts during a thunderstorm when she sings the well-known tune “My Favorite Things” to calm the children. The children find relief in singing together and embracing youth, and music ultimately brings the entire Von Trapp family together, showing the children a side of their father that they hadn’t seen in a long time. I would be remiss to not mention the anti-Nazi plot and themes of resistance that are particularly present in the second half of the movie. The Von Trapp family has to escape Austria in an act of resistance against the Third Reich, changing the tone of the film from a light-hearted romance to a historical drama. I would recommend this film to anyone and everyone who hasn't already watched it. If not only to listen to the soundtrack and enjoy Julie Andrews.
