This Song Is (not) for You is a realistic fiction young adult novel that follows three young musicians, Ramona, Sam, and Tom through their senior year of high school. They meet at auditions for a prestigious music university and become fast friends. Starting a band is just the natural course of nature, so is Sam and Tom both falling deeply in love with Ramona. As they navigate the various family hardships they are all facing, the band evolves into something new and unique. Towards the end of the book, the group has their first live performance, and even though people didn’t love their music, it’s ok because they love it (and that’s where the title comes from). As for who Ramona ends up with, I’m gonna keep that a mystery! My favorite part of the book is Tom’s creative energy and how he is using it to help solve problems in the world. The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is because it dragged on a little bit in the middle, but the end was quite surprising, so it was worth it. I would recommend this book to 8th and 9th graders who love making music, listening to music, or maybe even have a band!
