Say a Little Prayer is a realistic fiction young adult novel that follows young woman, Riley, through a difficult time in her life. She and her sister recently left the town’s church due to homophobia and her sister’s abortion, leaving the sisters feeling isolated and judged. Riley then slaps a girl at school and is disciplined with a week of church camp. At camp, Riley challenges herself to commit all seven deadly sins, instead of embracing the seven heavenly virtues. Towards the end of the book, Riley realizes she has a massive crush on her best friend (the pastor’s daughter) Julia, leaving Riley conflicted and confused. My favorite part of the book is the character development of Amanda Clarke and how our view of her changes positively throughout the story. The reason I gave this book four stars is I found the main character, Riley, a little annoying at some points throughout the book, but besides that, I loved it! I would recommend this book to anyone in middle school.
