Over the last few weeks I have been reading The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz and it has helped me with struggles I knew I was having but couldn’t previously explain. To be honest, I thought that the topic of choice and how too much is bad was a little narrow, and that an entire book didn't need to be written about it, but I was wrong. Schwartz starts by explaining his experience of being overwhelmed while picking out a pair of jeans, and then dives into loads of different psychological factors associated with decisions and choice. Towards the end Schwartz even goes into how the growing availability and freedoms of choice in a way go hand in hand with the growing rate of depression among Americans. I really enjoyed reading this book, and even if shopping has never been a struggle for you I highly suggest reading it. The Paradox of Choice breaks down more than just the psychology of buying a pair of jeans; It breaks apart decision making as a whole and in the end makes the entire process seem much easier.
