Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys is a young adult historical novel set in the 1950s in New Orleans. The story follows the life of Josie Moraine, a determined and resourceful young woman who dreams of escaping her mother's brothel and pursuing a better future through education. Despite the odds stacked against her, Josie works at a bookstore and navigates the complexities of the city's underworld, all while trying to uncover the truth about her father's identity. The novel explores themes of ambition, family, and the enduring pursuit of one's dreams in a vividly depicted post-war New Orleans.

The most compelling aspect of Out of the Easy was the vivid and immersive storytelling. Ruta Sepetys has an incredible talent for creating a sense of time and place, and her portrayal of 1950s New Orleans was nothing short of enchanting. The city's rich culture, its dark underbelly, and the resilient spirit of its people were all brought to life with such authenticity that I felt like I was right there alongside the characters. I had no disappointments with this book.  It had very unique takes and had a very strong motive of uncovering the identity of her father. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, especially if they have an interest in atmospheric settings and strong character development. It's a coming-of-age story with a unique and gripping backdrop that lingers in your mind long after you've finished reading.  If you appreciate evocative storytelling and well-drawn characters, Out of the Easy is a captivating choice that transports you to an era that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. I give this book a five out of five stars.
