Out from Boneville is a graphic novel, the first book of a 7-book series called Bone. In this book, there are three creatures called Bones, who are cousins. Their names are Fone-bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley. They used to live in Boneville, but Phoney Bone got kicked out and the others decided to accompany him. They were walking in the desert when they got separated, and all three landed in a mysterious valley. Fone-bone encountered some monsters called rat creatures, who try to eat him, but a mysterious figure appears and scares them off. Later he meets a girl who lives with her grandma, who lets him stay with them while he searches for his cousins. Later, we learn that there had been a mysterious war long ago. Grandma and the others on her side fought against the rat creatures. The war ended long ago, but both sides were still alive and neither had technically won. In this book, the leaders of the rat creatures come back to try to attack the humans and all other good creatures on their side. Will the rat creatures win and control the valley, or can Fone-bone, the girl, and her grandma fight off the rat creatures? Will Fone-bone ever reunite with his brothers?
I enjoyed this book a lot! The plot is really interesting and I loved how Jeff Smith built suspense in the story with the rat creatures not just being ugly creatures, but actually being part of a bigger evil scheme. Throughout this book there were many surprises, and really amusing jokes that made me want to read more. Because of all this, I give this book a five out of five.
