Othello is a Shakespearean play that is set in Cyprus. The play is about a tragedy where Othello, the protagonist through manipulation by the story’s antagonist, Iago, kills his wife. For some context, Iago is Othello’s assistant and vows to seek revenge against Othello after being passed up for a promotion. He does this by spreading rumors and lies that Othello’s wife, Desdemona is being unfaithful. This jealousy breaks Othello where he finally kills Desdemona, then himself. The story’s main themes focus on manipulation, jealousy as well as some racial prejudice as Othello was a black man and faced heavy prejudice from others. Personally, although I found the play to be well rounded, it just did not stand out to me. I feel as if the characters lacked some rationale, and while that is part of the plot, it just did not seem realistic to me. However, this play is definitely a good read and I would recommend it if you enjoy Shakespeare’s other works.
