Where to begin? OK Computer- Oknotok 1997 2017, an anniversary edition with B-sides and unreleased tracks, builds even further on the ideas of the band’s third album, OK Computer. Like the original songs, the B-sides and newly-released tracks represent a bleak outlook on the future, the emptiness of modern life, and conflicts between technology and man (seen in “Polyethylene, Parts 1 & 2” and “Palo Alto”). But there are also far more personal tracks here than were seen on the original album (“Lull”, “I Promise”, and “How I Made My Millions”, for example), showing a side of Radiohead that some would argue was not fully realized until their later releases of In Rainbows (2007) A Moon Shaped Pool (2016). The addition of such emotionally intimate songs to their earlier work rounds out an already stellar track list. Many consider OK Computer to be one of the best and most influential albums in music history, and the new tracks offer even more insight into the band’s experimentation with new sounds and ideas, all consolidated into one album. Previously, many of the B-sides had been seen on Airbag / How Am I Driving?, released in 1998. For those who enjoy OKNOTOK and want an even deeper understanding of the creative process behind the songs, the MiniDiscs [Hacked] catalogue is a great next step. While some songs off the album, such as “No Surprises” and “Exit Music (For a Film),” have gained recognition on their own, the album contains so much more than hits. Its powerful mix of societal commentary and instrumentation capable of conjuring emotions out of thin air make it a must-listen for music lovers and casual listeners alike.
