Sue Klebold is the mother of one of the two shooters from the Columbine shooting, Dylan Klebold. The shooting took the lives of thirteen students and teachers. Klebold’s memoir looks back on her son’s childhood and adolescence, reflecting on the missed signals of severe depression with much regret that she could not see those signals. She also reflects on the aftermath of the tragedy and how it was to be thrust into the public spotlight in such a way. Klebold wanted to destigmatize mental illness and explain that her son was an ordinary student with an undiagnosed clinical mental illness. The book challenges its readers to think critically about the ways of talking about gun violence, mass murder, suicide, and depression. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 because I thought that Klebold did an amazing job of telling her son’s story while respecting and remaining compassionate for the victims and their loved ones. This book did a great job at talking about mental illness and how dangerous it can get when it is untreated and unnoticed by those around. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read memoirs.
