A Moon Shaped Pool is one of Radiohead’s most personal works, an incredible feat when one considers that their discography includes albums like In Rainbows. However, A Moon Shaped Pool leans perhaps farther away from conventional rock than any other Radiohead album before it. It favors stripped-down piano arrangements and orchestral and choral elements that only elevate the impact of the beautiful lyrics and musicianship. As with many of their previous works, the lyrics are artistic, creative, and open to multiple interpretations, meaning the album can have even more impact to a large range of people. One particular strength of this album is the diversity of topics it offers. Tracks like “Glass Eyes” and “True Love Waits” are very personal songs, with vivid, moving lyrics. In contrast, “The Numbers” and “Burn the Witch” are clearly meant to express opposition to the social and political status quo, and they act as a call to action on pressing topics such as climate change. These songs speak to Radiohead’s continued relevance, despite their continuously changing style. This relevant commentary, and the artistry it is presented with, proves that the band itself will remain relevant and impactful for years to come.
