The Lord of the Flies is a compelling novel set during World War 2, about a group of British boys whose plane crashed, leaving them stranded on an uninhabited island. All boys are around 12 and younger. Since there are no adults, they have to form their own society, and elect a boy named Ralph as leader. He appoints Jack, a power-hungry kid who was leader of his choir, as second-in-command, who is in charge of all the hunters now. Ralph’s main goal is to get a fire going on top of a mountain on the island, because the smoke could act as a signal to attract adults. However, the boys aren’t very responsible, angering Ralph many times. Jack is more focused on hunting pigs and doesn’t care much about the signal. Because of their different views, Ralph and Jack fight a lot, and at one point, Jack leaves Ralph's group, bringing most of the older boys with him. Jack’s new “tribe” is much more savage, and he acts like a dictator, ordering his group to do immoral things. At one point, they even kill someone without realizing what they are doing, because the inner evil in them starts to come out. Things get bad, and someone else gets murdered. Will they ever get rescued by the adults, or will their own human nature kill them before anything else?

I thought that the Lord of the Flies was a fascinating book. It has a very interesting and potentially realistic plot. The descriptions are so vivid that you can clearly imagine being in the book with the boys as they live on the island. Golding introduced a lot of suspense into the novel to build up to the climax. Throughout the book, the reader starts to understand the moral of the story about human nature and mob mentality. Because of all this, I give this book a five out of five.
