Summary: Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil is a young adult novel that revolves around the life of Sam Kinnison, a high school student with a passion for filmmaking and a love for science fiction. Set in a typical Australian high school, the story explores themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery. Sam and his group of friends navigate the challenges of adolescence, dealing with the complexities of relationships and the pursuit of personal goals. The novel cleverly weaves in pop culture references, humor, and a genuine exploration of individuality. The author combines the ordinary with the extraordinary, creating a charming and relatable narrative that captures the essence of teenage life with a sci-fi twist.

Opinion: The most compelling aspect for me was the integration of science fiction fandom into the narrative, creating a unique and engaging backdrop for the coming-of-age story. Keil's humor and pop culture references added a delightful layer to the characters' experiences. While the plot didn't disappoint, there were moments when certain character arcs felt predictable. The novel inspired nostalgia for the awkward yet magical moments of adolescencse. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a blend of humor, heart, and a touch of sci-fi in their coming-of-age stories. It's a delightful read that will resonate with those who cherish their teenage years and the universality of growing up. I give this book a four out of five.
