Legend by Marie Lu is a dystopian fiction novel about Day and June. The book swaps perspectives every chapter, giving a good comparison of what it looks like to live on opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum in this future dystopian society. Day is a world-renowned criminal operating in the Republic, while June is the younger sister of a esteemed officer of the Republic. Soon, Day learns that his family has the plague, by the mark on their door. As far as they know he’s died, he’s been on the run for years. He is forced to steal medicine from a hospital, on the same night June’s brother chases Day down, and is found murdered. June isput in charge of investigating her brothers murder, and going undercover to track down Day. Eventually, June learns about Days family, and sets up a raid, killing Days mother and getting him arrested. June starts having doubts about whether or not her choices were right, and whether or not Day really killed her brother. After learning the truth, she decides she can no longer support the Republic, helping Day escape, and perfectly setting up the story for the next book. I love that even as I’ve out grown the reading level of this book, I still enjoy reading it for the storyline. Marie Lu has excellent story building skills, and every time I read it I feel like I pickup whole new details.
