“All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”

The final book in the famous Narnia series, The Last Battle discusses the war that will make or break Narnia forever. Some young naïve animals begin playing at being gods, and the repercussions that follow will change the entire kingdom.

This book was very short and not super interesting. I did enjoy the many metaphors sprinkled throughout the book but was a bit shocked at their darker undertones. I don’t know what was going on is Lewis’s life during this time, but there must have been something, and this book is his darkest. Not actually dark if you’re used to adult books, but for children’s literature it felt a bit out of place. Yet again they brought in characters that I’ve never enjoyed, but at least some of the original siblings made their appearance. Though I was quite disappointed that not all of them did, and we were given very little explanation for why someone becomes “no longer a friend of Aslan’s.” A series as beloved as this one deserved a better ending in my opinion, and the one we were given was out of place. I wished they had ended on a better note.
