Lodestar is the thrilling fifth installment in the middle grade fantasy series: Keeper of the Lost Cities. Sophie’s world is once again plagued by the attacks of the Neverseen. With threats on every side and mysteries to unravel, Sophie must do whatever she can to assure her family and friends are safe. The Neverseen are plotting something big, and it’s up to her to figure it out before it’s too late. Especially since the Neverseen are targeting those closest to her now.

The Pros: Lodestar keeps you guessing at each turn, and by the end of the book you’ll be staring at your wall in shock. Shannon Messenger does an excellent job at twisting the plot around so that you have no idea what’s coming next. Between her amazing cast of characters and exciting twists, Shannon Messenger creates a truly amazing world through the Keeper series that you’re bound to remember! My favorite thing about Lodestar was how we get to see all the characters through a new lens, and how the lines between good and evil begin to blur as the series goes on. I am definitely picking up the sixth book as soon as possible!

The Cons: In all honesty, it’s hard for me to think of any cons for this book. I think the Keeper series is suitable for all ages and can be enjoyable no matter what type of reader you are. However, it’s important to remember that the series is written for a middle grade audience. Therefore, the descriptions may be a little vague and the writing is geared towards younger readers. If you like books with a diverse vocabulary and more mature themes, this book may not be for you.

To summarize, Lodestar is a great continuation of the Keeper series we know and love and is entirely deserving of a 5 star rating. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and the found family trope, but I especially recommend this book for people in grades 5-9.
