A Review of Sandra Cisneros’s Fictional Work: The House on Mango Street

Esperanza Cordero is a young girl in a poor area in Chicago. Working towards the goal of self-empowerment and self-discovery, she finds problems with race, gender, class, and economic statuses that stand in the way of her. Short vignettes, stories, and poems provide insight into her life as she progresses towards her aspirations.

This title inspires the consideration of global issues that many live with on a daily basis, whether that is racial, socio-economic, or gender-based biases that make the lives of some more difficult, for no real reason. All of such occurs within a vignette-style poem, one that I had not been acquitted with before reading this book. This book is a short read; the pages are relatively easy to flick through, although I personally didn’t find the story engaging. But maybe I will simply have to reread it someday to change my mind. Recommended for all teens and above for the excellent message this work provides to all. Four out of Five.
