Heartstopper Volume 1 is a touching and uplifting graphic novel from Alice Oseman that captures the joys and struggles of first love. It tells the story of Charlie, an openly gay and engaging character, and straight rugby player Nick, from their tentative friendship to blossoming romance with themes of self-discovery and self-identity. It offers an emotional look at what it’s like to be young, gay, and trying to find your place in the world. Even if you are like me and typically stray away from reading graphic novels, this is a must-read. The artwork is beautiful and distinctive, the characters and story engaging, and Oseman is wonderfully inclusive and progressive in her depiction of LGBTQIA+ characters and relationships. I loved this novel and characters with difficulty putting it down, and I couldn’t wait to read the next book in this series.
