Budge Wilson's Before Green Gables acts as a prequel to Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. This book opens with Anne's parents as they prepare to start a family and ends when Anne is selected to live with the Cuthberts. Throughout the novel, we see Anne's passion for learning and her love of words appear and grow, staples of her character. The most intriguing thing about this novel is getting to see how Anne lived before moving to Prince Edward Island and how her past shaped her into the person we see in Montgomery's books.
This book was well-written; however, it was slow in some places. Wilson's creation of figures from Anne's past was amazingly well done; they were all incredibly complex. Sadly, I can only give this book 4 stars because it was hard to stay motivated at some points when I was reading.
