Frankenstein is a gothic/science fiction novel by Mary Shelley that takes place in the 18th
century. The main character is Victor Frankenstein who is a aspiring scientist who plays with the
elements of life, and creates a living monster in his ultimate science experiment. Though Victor
had achieved his dream of creating a living person, he had failed to see consequences of his
actions and pays a very harsh price for his doing. The creature is rejected by his creator and
the rest of mankind and he seeks vengeance for his cruel reality.

I really liked the overall theme of the novel and the greater takeaways from the novel about the
difference between one’s ambitions and what really matters to them, and the theme of revenge.
The beginning of the story was kind of boring with the exposition of Victor’s family and his early
life, but it pays off at the end of the book because it all comes together. I really liked the
perspective of the monster in the story, but I don’t understand his revenge towards Victor. I
guess maybe it represents the dark nature of humanity, but in my opinion there was really not
reason for the monster to go that far.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 because it was a very interesting classic that has influenced many
stories today. I recommend everyone read this book because it is a classic novel and everyone
should learn about the origins of the monster “Frankenstein”.
