Dune by Frank Herbert is perhaps one of the most popular science fiction novels of all time, and with the release of major box office smashing movie adaptations, now is as great time to start reading this classic science fiction story.

Dune weaves fantasy, science fiction, politics, environmentalism and more in fashion way ahead of its time. It tells the massive story of a young noble boy, Paul Atreides, a messiah-like figure and his journey on the desert planet of Arrakis with its spice trade and iconic sand worms. He grows as he spends time among nobles and nomads, with tons of fantastically realized characters such as his parents and the other members of the Atreides house, and the sinister Harkonnens led by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

With just the right amount of action and intrigue, it's difficult to explain the massive scale of Dune without spoiling anything. The best advice: go give it a read; you won’t regret it. With the release of Denis Villeneuve’s movies to go along, as well as the multitude of fantastic sequels, the massive world is a well realized phenomenon on a scale nearly unparalleled.
