Divergent by Veronica Roth takes place in a futuristic Chicago where people are divided into factions by their personalities. The ones who seek knowledge are in Erudite, the ones who wish to live a simple life are in Abnegation, the ones who wish to live a fearless life are in Dauntless, the ones who with to live in peace and harmony are in Amity, and the ones who wish to live a life of truth belong in Candor. There are also people who were exiled from their faction called the Factionless; and people who belong in multiple factions, dubbed Divergent. People who are Divergent are illegal. The book follows an Abnegation teen named Beatrice (Tris) who tests as Divergent and must hide her identity as Divergent when she decides to become Dauntless. She must also be able to make it through the difficult training to prove she belongs in her chosen faction.

I personally enjoyed this book mainly because of the world-building and futuristic setting. There were also some plot twists but they weren’t huge. However, I did  not like the romantic side plot as it felt flat and sudden. The romantic interest was weird and boring and some of the other side characters felt flat and static. Overall, I would recommend this book to people who enjoyed The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner, or really anyone who enjoys sci-fi and dystopias.
