A Discovery of Witches tells the story of Diana, the last of the powerful Bishop witches, who wants nothing to do with magic. Instead she chooses to study alchemy at Oxford. When she finds an enchanted manuscript during her research, daemons, witches, and vampires are drawn to Diana and the power the manuscript could bring. Among those looking for Diana and the manuscript is Matthew Clairmont, a vampire interested both in the manuscript and Diana herself. Together, they have to uncover the secrets of the manuscript, and of Diana’s potential power. I found both Diana and Matthew to be incredibly interesting, and the chemistry between the two leads is exciting. The romance takes center stage, which does draw away from the magic and mystery a bit. However, the world is deeply interesting and the story keeps you hooked throughout. Overall, A Discovery of Witches is an excellent supernatural romance with strong elements of mystery and science.
