The Boxcar Children is a novel by Gertrude Chandler Warner. This is one of my favorite books of all time and one of my comfort reads. The book is centered around four children, Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny, all of whom are orphans. Although they have their grandfather, they do not wish to live with him as they think he is cold hearted. Instead, they venture out in hopes of finding a place to live. Through countless nights sleeping in a different place each time such as a bakery or a haystack, they finally find themselves an abandoned boxcar, which they decide to settle in. This book follows the journey of the Alden children as they try to navigate life by themselves and live in fear of their grandfather, whom they learn who he really is and how he is at the end of the story. Overall, this is a classic read and I would highly recommend it to anyone just looking to pick up an easy yet engaging book to read as you find yourself rooting for the Alden children.
