In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, a young girl named Liesel gets adopted and lives in Nazi Germany during World War II. Her life changes one day when she finds a book covered in snow, and she decides to steal it. Liesel knows that this is dangerous as all books were supposed to be turned in for book burnings, but she takes it anyway. She continues stealing books, thrilled by the new knowledge she gains access to. Soon after, her family hides a Jewish man in their home which elevates the risk for her entire family. Though, Liesel now sees the world from a different point of view and fights to keep her family safe.

I absolutely loved this book. I really enjoy reading historical fiction, and this was probably one of my favorite historical books I have ever read. First, I really liked how the book was written from the perspective of Death. It was a different take and I think it helped enhance the overall story. I also loved the characters. It was wonderful to see how Liesel and Rudy’s relationship grew throughout. The author wrote great character development for all of the characters, but especially Rudy, who develops into an extremely caring individual who fights for those he loves. The author does a great job of keeping the reader engaged in each chapter, and I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
