Artemis Fowl is a fantasy novel by Eoin Colfer. It is the first novel in the Artemis Fowl series. It follows Artemis Fowl, a child genius who decides to kidnap a fairy named Holly Short for ransom in order to reinstate his family fortune. However, he has to contend with the magic of these dangerous fairies to succeed with his plot.
This novel is a fresh and fun take on the fantasy genre. Artemis Fowl isn’t a typical kid hero, but more of a villain protagonist that is still easy to connect with and understand. The novel also infuses the magical world with technology in a seamless way, not underwhelming or overwhelming the reader. Its plot is entertaining and features some comedic moments as well. I would recommend this novel for fantasy readers, despite its YA novel status. I rate it five stars.
