Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if magic was possible? Akata Witch tells the story of 12-year-old Sunny as she opens her eyes to a world of magic she didn’t even know existed. Previously, she had always been different from her peers and friends in one way or another, but soon after she discovers juju, Nigerian magic, she realizes that it is responsible for why she never fit in. Sunny learns to embrace her differences as she starts to perform her own juju, but just as she’s settling in, she discovers that, with the help of three friends, she must stop one of the world’s most dangerous serial killers—and he knows juju too.

Akata Witch is a perfect book if you like suspense, danger, and, of course, magic; I recommend it to everyone, even if fantasy isn’t your favorite genre. I also love that it occurs in Nigeria, which is a place that I don’t happen to read about very much, and because of that, it incorporates Nigerian culture. I really enjoyed reading about the traditions and magic in Akata Witch because it was so different from many of the other books I’ve read that it really was like stepping into a world of magic and fantasies. The only misleading factor is that most of the book is spent introducing you to the magic, while very little time is spent actually fighting the serial killer. However, in the end, I still think Akata Witch is a very engrossing and entertaining book, and you should definitely try it!
