The Wall is a strong contender for the best album of all time, plain and simple. No artist before or since–even Floyd themselves–has quite managed to deliver such an inventive and moving work of art. The album is a prime example of a concept album, where the work as a whole follows a central theme or story, in this case, a rockstar’s descent into madness and paranoia. Due to the complexity of the themes and individual songs, the album rewards repeated listens. Proof of this album’s greatness is found in the tracks Another Brick in the Wall (Pt. 2) and Comfortably Numb. The former provides strong commentary on the failures of the education system, and the latter describes the experience of a singer reflecting on childhood while being medicated so he can play a show. Despite these challenging topics, both songs were commercially successful and influential to other bands. Pink Floyd’s influence, and the influence of this album, can be found in acts ranging from Tool to Radiohead, and their legacy is one of innovation and pushing boundaries, cemented by the success of The Wall. This album is a must-listen for fans of rock in any form, and it will likely change the way you see much of the music you already love.
