The House on Mango Street is a fiction novel written by Sandra Cisneros.
This novel is about Esperanza Cordero, who shares her feelings and life with the
readers through vignettes. She talks about her struggles due to the
neighborhood she is from, and the lives of people in that time, and that status.
The neighborhood she lives in is disliked by her and many others, causing her to
feel ashamed of her life. She shares her life with her parents, siblings, and friends
even when everything seems to collapse. She wishes for a new and nice home,
unlike her previous and current ones. However, her financial status is stopping
her from achieving this. She does not get a new home, but she learns to live, and
accept this fact slowly. She wishes to move and be successful to meet her dreams
as she gets older.

The most compelling aspect of this book is when she is embarrassed of her
home, and how she slowly learns that everyone is going through something
similar. I wished to know if she ever got over this completely. I was disappointed
when she discriminated against herself, and felt as if she was not special enough.
I wished she would believe in herself, which would help her achieve her dreams,
and not demotivate her. This book inspired me to think and feel about what can
happen if you demotivate yourself but dream high, and now I know to believe in
what I wish for, and not be ashamed of wanting to achieve this. I would
recommend this book to readers who like to see others reflect and work towards
their dreams, however if you do not like cliffhangers and a very over descriptive
book I would not recommend this book for you.
