At Blue Valley: Steph Kates

Tuesday, December 3 to Saturday, December 21, 2019
at

Steph Kates began her art career as a painter, creating otherworldly landscapes exploring mythology, fairytales and fables. When she transitioned from painting to ceramics, she combined her years of experience with image-making, illustration and pattern work to the practice of pottery. Kates creates her surface designs using a process called sgraffito: before the clay fully dries, she paints on layers of underglaze, then hand carves her unique designs. She fires the clay, applies glaze and fires again. Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind.

Steph Kates received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and works from her home studio in Kansas City.

Throwback Thursday

Our friends at the Johnson County Museum, 8788 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, are open! Last year they presented A Very Retro Christmas and we absolutely loved it. Sadly, that display is on hiatus this year, but you can still visit over the holidays for a safe educational outing.

Notable Books 2019

At first glance we thought someone had something against furniture "No table books"??? What do you have against tables?! But then, we realized we needed to pay a little more attention to what we're reading. "Notable" not "No Table." (We apologize for that HORRIBLE joke!!!)

Our readers advisory librarian Gregg Winsor makes another Did You Hear? appearance to discuss Notable Books! Gregg, Dave and Melissa reveal this list of great books from 2019. Gregg whittled this list of 50 titles down from numerous Library staff nominated titles. Get ready to add to your “to read” list!

Featured Artist Friday: Joshua Merello

Joshua Merello is a self-taught musician whose solo acoustic guitar music represents "a reflection of my own state of mind: the depression and anxiety that most of us tend to deal with, and the joy of living that comes from growing beyond a mental illness." With his first album, Equilibrium, Merello creates contemplative music for chaotic times. It is a pleasure to share an interview with Joshua Merello about his musical background, touring and creative process.
