Voting 2023

You must be a resident of the state in which you are registering, and you must be a U. S. Citizen.  If you are 17, but will turn 18 before the election date, you can register! 

Register by October 17th vote in the November 7, 2023 General Election.  

Printed forms in English and Español may be returned by mail, email, text, or fax. You may also submit your voter registration online if you have a valid Kansas driver’s license or nondriver’s identification card.   

You may register to vote at any time. However, voter registration always closes 21 days prior to an Election Day. Applications must be postmarked no later than the 21st day prior to any election to be eligible to vote. 

Check to see if you are currently registered, find your polling place or view a sample ballot in Kansas through VoterView provided by the Kansas Secretary of State. 

You can apply for advanced ballots from your County Election Office, or through KSVotes (Español). Each election requires a new application. In other words, if you request a mail in ballot for the primary, you will need to make a new request for the general election. Voters with permanent disabilities are eligible to apply for Permanent Advanced Voting (Español), and return to their County Election Office. Ballots begin mailing 20 days prior to an election. 

There are several ways to return your completed advanced ballot: 

• If you mail your ballot, it must be postmarked no later than November 7 and received by the election office by November 10. 
• You may return your completed ballot at any open advanced polling locations between Oct. 28 – Nov. 6.  
• You may return your completed ballot at your designated polling location on Election Day, during polling hours. 

Johnson County Election Office has installed several ballot drop off boxes around the county. Ballots may be returned to any convenient location. 

The 24-hour, drive-thru ballot boxes at the Election Office (2101 E Kansas City Rd, Olathe) will also continue to be available for voters. 

Early in person voting can be done at several locations between Saturday, October 28 and Saturday, November 4th. A limited number of In-Person Advance Voting locations are open on the Monday prior to Election Day, November 6.  Check the list of advance voting locations in Johnson County for places, dates, and times.

Wyandotte County residents may check here. 

Each registered voter has a designated polling place. Polling places can change, so even if you have voted in the past, it’s a good idea to check your polling place for each election. Please visit the Election Office website to find your polling location. Polls are open between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. 

Kansas state law requires you to bring a photo ID when voting in person. Acceptable forms include: 

• A driver’s license or identification card issued by Kansas, another state. 
• ID card issued by a Native American tribe 
• A concealed carry of handgun or weapon license issued by Kansas or by another state. 
• A United States passport. 
• An employee badge or ID issued by a city, county, state, or federal government office. 
• A U.S. military ID. 
• A student identification card issued by an accredited postsecondary institution of education in Kansas. 
• A public assistance identification card issued by a city, county, state or federal government office.

• For information about candidates or issues, the eNewspapers section of our eLibrary is a great resource. The Kansas City Star, Shawnee Mission Post, and Blue Valley Post include coverage of local candidates and issues on upcoming ballots. You will need your Johnson County Library card or ecard to access digital newspapers. 
• Ballotpedia provides biographical, current and past work of elected officials, campaign themes and more. 
• Factcheck.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit site covering many topics of current interest related to campaign topics. 
• Politifact, a non-profit news organization, offers fact checking on current topics, candidate statements and claims, media personalities and campaigns. Users may also submit claims to have them fact checked.
