Meet the Author

Come hear acclaimed Gene Luen Yang speak about reading without walls and his creative process as a comic artist and writer.

Wednesday, April 12
10 - 11 a.m.

Johnson County Community College – Yardley Hall

Yang began making comics and graphic novels in the fifth grade. In 2006, his book American Born Chinese became the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association’s Printz Award. Since then, his genuine stories of identity and otherness have been beloved by critics and readers alike. Currently he writes for DC's Superman

Recently named a MacArthur Fellow and the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Yang has been traveling the country promoting his message of "reading without walls." Through this platform, Yang encourages kids, parents, librarians and teachers to read books about a characters who don't look or live like them, about topics they have not previously explored and in a format they don't usually pick up.

This special event is presented in partnership with the Johnson County Community College Performing Arts Series. Schools interested in attending this event may email Angel Mercier (amercier@jccc.edu) to see if they qualify for funding to assist with busses.
