Tax Help

AARP Kansas Tax AideFree tax preparation assistance for low- and middle- income taxpayers with special attention to those ages 50 and older.  You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service.  The AARP Appointments Calendar will go live in mid- to late-January, 2024.  To make an appointment at that time, go to www.kstaxaide.com or call the AARP Call Center at 913-735-5489.

(VITA) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance:   The Johnson County VITA Tax site will be offering in-person and drop-off services for the 2023 tax season. In-person services are available on a first come, first served basis. They do not make appointments. The income threshold to use this service for 2023 is $60,000 or less.

Low Income Taxpayer Clinic | Kansas Legal Services Free legal assistance on federal tax matters for low-income taxpayers from Kansas Legal Services. The clinic focuses on resolving disputes, not preparing returns. Apply online for service or call (800) 723-6953.

Free Online Tax Preparation

IRS FreeFile:

A public-private partnership between the IRS and many tax preparation and filing software industry leaders who provide their online tax preparation and filing for free. It provides two ways for taxpayers to prepare and file their federal income tax online for free.

MyFreeTaxes:

United Way, in partnership with the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps people file their taxes for free while getting the assistance they need.
